Soil health is the condition of soil based on its ability to function as a living ecosystem. This living ecosystem should sustain plants, animals, and other living creatures. Maintaining soil health is essential for sustainable agriculture, environmental conservation, and overall ecosystem stability.

Soil health has a significant impact on plant health. To grow healthy plants you have to be taking care of your soil. Soil health is also important for a healthy and sustainable ecosystem.

Poor Soil Health Affects

Nutrient Deficiency Plants require nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium to grow along with many other secondary macronutrients. Unhealthy soil often lacks these essential nutrients and plants may start to show signs of nutrient deficiency. If your plants have yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and other abnormal colouring in the leaves, there might be a problem with your soil health. Imbalanced pH levels will also affect nutrient availability for plants. If your pH is too acidic or too alkaline some nutrients become less accessible. This leads to nutrient deficiency in plants. Adding compost and other soil amendments will help fix this issue.

Poor Soil Structure If your soil has low organic matter it will not be able to hold onto water and will result in inadequate moisture levels for plant roots. Unhealthy soil is also prone to erosion which can remove the topsoil taking important nutrients with it. Poor soil health can also lead to compaction which restricts root growth. Plants become more susceptible to drought. Compacted soil might not drain well which can also lead to water logging and cause root rot.

Vulnerable to Pests and Disease Poor soil health will grow unhealthy plants that are much more vulnerable to pests and diseases. With the reduced biological activity soil becomes less resilient making it easier for pathogens to thrive.

Reduced Biological Activity Unhealthy soil will have fewer beneficial insects, fungi, and microorganisms which leads to an imbalanced system. This greatly affects the soil health and plant growth as these beneficial organisms play a crucial role in nutrient cycling and soil structure.
