Provide Airflow

Preview

Improving airflow around your seedlings is essential for their healthy growth and to prevent issues like mold and damping-off.

Below are some tips to enhance airflow:

Use a Small Fan: Place a small oscillating fan near your seedlings to create gentle air movement. This helps strengthen the seedlings' stems and prevents stagnant air. Move the fan around the space frequently to ensure all plants receive adequate airflow.

Proper Spacing: Ensure your seedlings are spaced adequately. Crowding can restrict airflow and increase the risk of disease. Follow the recommended spacing guidelines for each type of plant.

Open Windows: If possible, open windows to allow fresh air to circulate in the room, improving ventilation and reducing humidity levels. However, avoid this if it’s -20°C outside!

Adjust Humidity Dome: If you're using a humidity dome or cover, remove it or prop it open slightly once the seedlings have sprouted to allow better air exchange. We remove any humidity dome once seedlings have sprouted to minimize the risk of mold growth.

Rotate Seed Trays: Periodically rotate your seed trays to ensure even exposure to light and air. This helps prevent any one area from becoming too humid.

Thin Seedlings: If multiple seedlings are growing too close together, thin them out to improve air circulation. This can also help the remaining seedlings grow stronger.

Elevate Seed Trays: Use racks or trays with holes to elevate your seedling containers slightly. This allows air to flow underneath the trays and helps prevent moisture buildup.

Clean Growing Area: Keep the growing area clean and free of debris. Regularly wiping down surfaces can help reduce the risk of mold and other pathogens.
